Hey folks! This forum stimulates lots of great ideas and provides some excellent motivation for over-the-top Halloween displays. I joined last summer, looking for ideas on how I might pull off a pirate display for the first time. In addition to what I found on the forum, I came up with some props that provided some great visual impact.
Using some luan (thin plywood) panels, cardboard sonotubes, flashing Christmas light strings, and a little black paint, I turned the five windows on the front of my old house into gun ports on a pirate ship as show in the attached files.
For photos of my complete 2009 Halloween display, go here: Warren Maxwell's Photos - Dead Man's Cove 2009 | Facebook. Please note this was my first attempt at a pirate theme and the display was still a little rough. I plan to expand it big time for 2010. I have a few ideas, but I'm open to suggestions.
BTW, I planned to construct a cannon and gun carriage, but I ran out of time and had to jettison that idea for 2009. Once things warm up a bit here in New England, I'll head out to my garage and start construction on it for this Halloween. The cannon barrel will be made of PVC pipe and I plan to connect it to my fog machine - I'm calling this Project Smoking Gun. :-)

That is a really creative and effective method! As someone who has long wanted to do a pirate theme, I'm adding this to the list of things I'd want mine to look like. Very nice!
