i am making an animated Ouija board and i was tossing some designs around (board layout and lettering not mechanics). any ideas. my mechanism is going to be remote controlled so i plan to hack a cheap remote controlled object (RC cars go to fast but might work) the original design was a ring of all the letters and numbers and yes no and goodbye. and a plate the spun around to point to a character. i also thought of using magnets and doing a hidden rotating arm under the board surface and using a planchette. i think wood burning is going to be my only option as i can not find any cool stamps/stiuckers.
maybe combining the two.. like a circle of numbers the planchette covers and then a separate circle that spins to point to numbers...
also i can't decide on a theme. I saw some Celtic ones that were pretty cool but i wanted to try to do a voodoo themed one but don't know what that would look like
i can try to draw and scan and post pics if needed but my drawing skills arent quite up to par for this![]()

Try looking at some clip art to see what designs you might like. Then just trace that design on your board. Then paint and seal. That's all I did for mine. If you do decide to use the wood burning method just be careful you don't go too deep as the planchette or magnet could catch on the deep grooves on your board.

I have a mechanism design that may be superior.
you can get these really powerful magnets, maybe for 5 bucks for two.
you can implant one of the magnets inside the small device on the ouija board (the thing you put your hands on, i have no idea what its called) and you can put the other magnet under the table, (if you are using a table) and have the close to the surface, and hook up a wiper motor, (you can play atmosphereic music so you cant hear it) and attach the magnet to it, so it moves on its own. Now as for the design, this might come in handy, its designed for that circular motion that if you used a wiper motor! And you can get it to stop how you want: get one of those footpeddles they sell around christmas for your christmas tree and such, hook your motor up to it, and you can stop the motor when you want, by pressing your foot down on the peddle, so you can stop anywhere on the board you want.
Good luck with it!

To save time you might want to get your hands on one of those holiday skaters sets where the plastic figures skate around the "pond" on magnets. I have one like this one I found on Ebay:

I'm thinking canabalize the guts of an etchosketch and glue a magnet to the pen, pointer, ... thingy. None too sure how to hook it for remote movement. Maybe some RC servos? I expect something that will rotate the thing's knobs.
What doesn't kill you can still make you walk funny.

Here is my animated Ouija board and VooDoo queen used in our haunted house this year.
I used a motor from a Christmas Reindeer with magnets.
