Hello all!! I'm working on a Fantasmic! Theme for next year. Figured I'd better start now. I cannot for the life of me find a Maleficent dragon mask, we are working on turning a poor little animated reindeer into a fire breathing angry lady dragon hahaha. The closest thing I have found is this:
Shopzilla - Find low prices on Albino Dragon Deluxe Oversized Mask By Don Post in Toys & Games
    OR
Shopzilla - Find low prices on Ancient Dragon Premiere Mask in Toys & Games
In which I would I have to hack off some hair
I need it to look like:

Is it possible to paint these? Anyone had any success? Any particular paint? Any advice would greatly appreciated! ^_^

You can paint latex masks with water-based paint (acrylic paint). Great idea making a deer into a dragon!

I vote for the second one (with the hair) because it has more prominent horns.
Yeah, I've painted a latex mask with acrylics, too. Just the little cheapie ones from Michaels will do the trick.

I like your theme concept. What other props/scenes will you be doing for it?

the dragon idea is brilliant. I love the idea of making a deer into a dragon.

thank you all for the quick replies! ^_^ Yes I went ahead and bought the one with hair, I'll just give it a little trim. Right now I'm working on a Maleficent, and a zip line for a Tinkerbell mannequin. We are trying to figure out how to put together a Chernabog, which is going to be very very difficult and we're not sure where to start. We are thinking of creating a body out of PVC pipe or chicken wire and monster mud. Then making wings, and propping him up on a rock made of similar material (like in the Disney Parade float below). I may have to post a new topic about him haha. My sister is going to be Belle, I'm Mickey Mouse the sorceror I bought his $200 costume for 59 after Halloween ^_^ And she is working to see if we can't make Scar out of an animated reindeer as well, same concept as the wolf everyone is making just a lion instead. Out local big lots had animated reindeer on sale for 8.99 so I bought 9 of them to tinker and play around with. Thank you very much for the Verno, the dragon link! That will prove very very useful! Thank you again!

Thank you VERY much for those links, definitely be very helpful. And also a big thank you for the advice, means a lot coming from a haunter of your magnitude. Your pictures from this years haunt were FANTASTIC! Do you have any thoughts on making a rock for him to "rise" out of? I was considering chicken wire and paper mache, I'm not sure if it will work or not though. thanks again!

Chicken wire and mache is definitely the way I'd go. It's cheap and easy.

I think it would be really cool if you did a pose like this for ol' Cherno:
Villains on parade on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
There's lots of pictures of that float on flickr (just search Chernabog), so you can get plenty of reference from all angles....it might be harder to make it structurally sound with the arms outstretched, though.

And thank you! I don't get a compliment like that every day

Have you checked out Dan Reeder's site (Gourmet Paper Mache)
He's constructed large dragon's using paper mache and cloth mache.

    It's cheap too.

Acrylics can crack on latex masks over time, so mix some acrylic paint in liquid latex. That way it stays on better and is more flexible.
