    To keep busy this winter, I'm working on new (for me anyway) paper/cloth mache creations. The end result of this creature (Mr. Frank N. Stein) is to be a full size pneumatic prop. You have to start somewhere, in this case a wad of paper;

The first mache (brown because it's the color of paper I had). This was a flour/water mix. I also started forming a body using an inflatable dummy. Forearms and hands using wire frame and paper mache.

The next coat had more detail. Used White Glue/water mix and shop towels.
Finally attached to the body (placed 2x2 wood 'T' frame in the body for strength). A little 'Great Stuff' was applied to empty areas between the 'T' frame and the body mold. This made the shoulders rigid and bonded the body to the frame.

First paint coat to even out the base, some additional paint detailing. Used some paper clay to smooth out facial features.

Top half assembled. More detailing to come. The 'Y' is supposed to be an autopsy incision (stapled closed)

I think I'd like to add hair and of course a lower half. Pupils ?

    Regards

    Doc

    Lookin' good!

I vote yes on pupils, but I wouldn't make them too harsh.

    Thank you.

Pupils are in (courtesy of Haunters Hangout - Easy Eyes, then a couple coats of clear nail polish). Too harsh? Too Subtle?

I think I did a poor job describing that. I've read many different ways to do this as well. The frame was made from coat hangers, cut and shaped to look like a hand. The wire is really two 'V' shapes and one long wire from the middle finger to the elbow (with a little extra to connect to the upper arm)

I then duct taped the pieces together and used tape to form the 'webbing' of the hands, between the fingers.

Crumpled newspaper formed the bulk of the forearms and palms. I wrapped newspaper around each finger (and of course a bunch of masking tape)

The hands and arms were then paper mached a couple time to smooth the bumps, then painted.

I should have photographed the process. I think I'll be doing some zombie arms and hands in the near future and I'll try to document that process.

The nice thing is that the arms cost next to nothing to make and involved no exotic materials.

Super cool! I like the color scheme
Can we see a close up on the hands? I always have trouble sculpting those, but it looks like you did a really good job

Close up of the hands... They probably look better from a distance (or in the dark)

    And now the feet

I thought of just using shoes, but why not a barefoot creature?

Feet were constructed with a 3" W x 1" H x 6" L pieces of wood. Coat hanger wire was used to form toes (wire was duct taped to the wood). Newspaper crumpled & wrapped to fill-in bulk (and more tape). Finally paper mached.

The 2x2 wood will form the legs, but will be hidden by pants.
