What's the budget? Motion light works and cheap. Next step up would be a prop1 with a PIR and can control more than one light, but your heading at 3x the cost.

You can also run your audio through a Kit 12 Audio-To-Light Modulator. Your light would plug into the circuit and then flash the light in sync with the audio track. Cost is about $15 bucks. Typically, you would use a outdoor light with sensor and plug into the socket. About as cheap as you can do it. The next step up, like mentioned in the other post, is to program a Basic Stamp card (EFX-Prop1) to trigger the above effects. Now you are upto about $100 some dollars.
Any light and socket would so the trick, assuming it is below the allowable wattage.

That is what I did for my mib this year. I got a basic ceiling mount light socket plate that had a pull string. I think it was about $3.00 at the most. Then I picked up a $7.00 electrical cord for wiring a lamp. I had a flicker plug in from an electrical store that I paid about $5.00 for a few years back. I screwed in one of those energy effiecent spiral red lightbulbs so it wouldn't burn out if hit or have the filliment break. Worked great.
