a medusa creature? I watched a Jim Hensen show last night and the Medusa was beautiful and scary, and I thought "she would be great in a yard..and maybe a massager motor to make the snakes move...and maybe a couple of men that looked at her in "stone" and maybe...." it went on and on. Then I thought "I never have heard of anyone doing her as a prop."
have you ever made her? ~Shelley

I haven't offhand heard of doing her as a prop... but that would be a great idea for a different sort of yard display.
Have a medusa that is moving in the back of the area with glowing eyes... around her are monster mudded creatures and figures of her victims - turned to stone and now standing as monuments to their own deaths...
Could be a cool idea and educational.

Check this out!!!
Make Medusa's head Live!!!
Get rubber snakes from the dollar store.
Bore a hole down the middle of them.
Hook them up to air pressure.
When the air pressure is turned on the snakes will move or wipe around depending on the air pressure.
YEP I will be making one of these next year. I have over shot my budget for this year by a few hundred $. I am so exited I need to draw this thing up so I don't forget it.
Oh ya I was so excited when that thought pop in my head that I almost forget to say good luck with your prop. I would love to see some photos afterwords

I have been working on one off and on for the last few years, but have not yet finished it.
I have a servo to run the mouth and LED eyes. I was going to build a tiny version of the spider wiper mechanism to run eight snakes protruding from the top of her head.
I got stuck on the mechanism. Plan B is to use electrical solenoids to move the snakes, but it has been on the back burner for awhile now, mostly due to the birth of my little one.
This was pulled from a plaster mold I made from a wig head and clay. I painted in a couple layers of latex in the mold and then laid paper mache on that until it was stiff enough to hold the mechanism. The lower mouth was molded separately and then attached with a bit of wire as a pivot point and another bit of wire to the servo mounted at the back of the head.

Hmmm nice idea.
Medusa towards the house looking into a large mirror since that is the only real way to see her without turning to stone. But...have little kids in costumes, with trick or treat bags turned to "stone" in various poses as if they were caught trying to sneak up and take a peak at her. Hmmm.Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is more Halloween props, some new LED lights, a 1000 watt fog machine, pink foam for gravestones and a flying ghost.

I am still plotting and planning one for next year. I been talking to the parents in the neighborhood and some of them are giving me their kid's costumes from this year. (Insert evil cackle here)
I am going to spend the winter and next summer making them into "Beloved" type gravestones. So far I have coming a unicorn, a witch, a scarecrow, a couple princesses and a frog. After Hallowee I am going to hit all the stores for trick or treat holders like the pumpkin and wire lights into them.
I think I am more excited for next year!Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is more Halloween props, some new LED lights, a 1000 watt fog machine, pink foam for gravestones and a flying ghost.

oooh..I like this idea. Air sounds like a plausible option for movement. A few years back at Transworld, there was a moving vine prop that I believe worked via a length of wooden balls connected together down the center with a length of cable. When the cable was lax, they were hanging loose, when pulled taught, they would straighten out. Even a simple bent coat hanger pushed down the middle of a rubber snake inside a plastic tube....fish tank air line or something....connected to a slow turning motor...might create a squirming movement.
Adding this to the list of things for next year.
All of you prop builders really ROCK!!!
