I am looking for some ideas on a cannon or set of cannons really. I am thinking about building some pirate ships that will be having a cannon battle. I want the sound and smoke, but no pyrotechnics. I also want the cannon to be able to reload without my help.
Anyone have any ideas???
Thanks in advance!

I've never built one, and there are probably plenty on here that have. That being said, I would use pvc pipe for the barrel. You'll need to decorate it with paper mache or foam to give the outside the look of a canon. I would hook a fog machine at the back end and use an air canon to blow it out. I would also insert an orange light in there. You can time it all, along with sound, by using a controller.
You may be more skilled than me and build your own controllers, but this year I'm using a couple of Nerve Center controllers from Monster Guts Prop Controllers - Nerve Center - Halloween Prop Building Supplies For The Home Haunter - Monster Guts
and various picoboos from Fright Ideas

Here is a thread that may be helpful. Amazing fog machine-powered cannons!
If you search in the props and tutorials you'll find several threads about how to build a canon (most are static props).

Hmmm... You could use static display cannons (black PVC pipe) and hide some of these propane powered noismakers on the battling ships:
Sutton Ag - Zon Mark 4 propane cannon for bird control
Use sound activated switches in conjunction with the firing cannons to control flashing light effects and foggers which could be hooked up to the static cannons:
Sound Activated Switch
It's all doable; sounds like a fun project!

Thanks everyone. The cannon thread from ducdukgoose68 looks like exactly what I want to do. Thanks for the info. I'll check out the sound effects too. This project will be for next year (2010), but I'll post my progress for everyone to see.
Thanks again!shadetree_haunter
