It would take a lot of manual labor, but anyone's front yard can be retro-fitted for underground fog. Before digging, the sod can be cut in 12" swaths and the sod can be peeled up in 12" squares. Use stringlines and a sharpened Post Hole shovel to cut the sod. A conventional square-nose shovel works well to trim the sod below the root level. You'll want to keep the squares in a shady place, and kept damp. After the lines are in and backfilled, the sod sections are re-installed. After only a few days the grass grows in and you'd never know that the lawn had been disrupted. I've had this done on two projects where we retro-fitted drainage lines. Trust me, it's doable, people.....

And, hey, how simple would it be to slide a bunch of dry ice pellets down there....
Hell just rent a power sod cutter for about 30 bucks, those suckers rock!

When you do sprinklers drains etc you usually only go down a few inches there shouldn't be any risk of hitting any utility lines. Its smart to have them come out and check where lines are but it shouldnt be a problem. I know that my water and gas are at about the 3foot mark according to edison and the gas company. when you are laying drains especialy for this application you shouldn't have to go verry deep because you don't have to worry about frost heave (if its a problem in your area) unless you plan on running water through it consistantly. My drains are only about 10" deep and have no problems. I didn't run any electrical due to the fact that I have multiple outlets on the front of my house that I had added on a 60 amp timer so they can all be turned on and off at the same time. I just get creative with my extension cords if I have to run them accross the yard.
