Thanks again everybody.Thats actually the way his head looks fresh out of the water, his fish scales are hard diamond shape bones so they don't decay, I was so surprised he stay in tact and didn't just fall apart.There are 4 spieces of Gar; Aligator gar,longnose gar (or needlenose),spotted gar,and shortnose gar.They are found in most fresh water rivers in the us.We went after them one day on a big boat and got 12 of them and saw many more, they surface in the heat of the summer and we troll real slow standing on the boat so we don't spook them and when you see one you only have a few seconds to shoot or they will be gone, it takes practice but we have been doing it for 12 years................................ Most of them are small 18" and a few lbs. but the one in the pic that I got is almost 4' long and 10 lbs. The state record here is 15 lbs.so he was nice. He did cut me with those sharp teeth on the leg after I boated him. I just finished spraying him with varnish so now he's real glossy and wet looking. I also added some plexiglass to protect him and the TOT's from those sharp teeth. Yeah he does look ancient now and creepier.
