If you are looking to simulate the wood grain, There is a rubber roller tool ( I saw at Michael's) That will do the trick. I have not used one but I have seen the outcome and it looks pretty good. You might even do the faux painting technique dragging a plastic grocery bag tied in knots through the wet paint to get the same effect. Try some tests to get it right.

I've been doing the exact same thing with my 3/4" foam board. I'm using a soldering iron with a spade tip.
