    With a rubber mallet and about 7 nice taps/whacks. The knife is pretty significant and sharp and didn't take much effort.

    I have been using the Hot Blood Stix from Skeleton Foundary - it looks quite real and it works with a regular glue gun. Here is a link to one of their Ghoul It Yourself projects that uses a cutting board and the Blood Stix:
