If the stand is like what I have it will turn both directions. When mine gets a good enough strain on it, it will turn the opposite direction. Might help in what you decide to make.

The one I pictured doesn't. In fact, I think it had gotten caught on something (prolly hubby's leg while decorating) and that's what broke the gear. I had always assumed there was a clutch or something as a safety feature. Guess the safety feature is that the gear is plastic and breaks, LOL!
