I know everyone has made this, but some I have seen shown on the net with the wires twisted around the poles of the starter are scary and should not be done!

If you can't get the actual socket for the starter (the proper thing to do) you can do this.

File down the knobs on the end of the starter and use a florescent bulb holder. It actually called a "tombstone"; the starter will fit tightly and safely into it.

Nice idea. Those sockets are hard to find at many hardware and lighting stores, but I've seen the "tombstones" everywhere. And good advice on not wrapping wires on the starters.

On a related note, here's a power strip I hacked that uses 3 starters for various flicker effects.

Very clever! Never thought of that one, I've been looking everywhere for starter bases. Thanks for a great idea!

I got out the old soldering gun and soldered my wires on. I then carefully taped them and put them in a project box for further safety.

It would make our project easer if the staters pole were made copper, rather than aluminum.
