Is there a kit that I can buy that will plug into the kit 74's parallel and can run a set of instructions, therefore eliminating the attachment to the computer?
I guess what I'm looking for is a PIC controller but I need to know how to compile the instructions uploaded it to the controller and then simply plug it in to the KIt 74.
Thanks for the help!

I don't think its possible and probably the easiest way you can plug something in would be a laptop.
I too have a Kit74 which I'll figuring out this year- too late for halloween but I'll be trying a few things- and I got a server from freecycle which will be the brains of this system.

If you can find a microcontroller with a Parallel output, I would imagine it should work. Even if it doesn't have a Parallel output, it is very likely that it has at least eight outputs on the board. You could just build a cable with a Parallel connector on one end and whatever your microcontroller wants on the other end.
The difficulty comes with learning the microcontroller's language, and determining how to program your 'show' with that language and the available outputs. There is probably already software available, but how easy it is to use and how much it costs is beyond me. I haven't used a microcontroller yet.
I've been using Commodore 64's and a Vic 20 to run my Kit-74 with no problems, just tedious programming. The Commodores also allow sensor input (floor mats, light sensors, etc.) through the joystick ports. This year I plan to use a PC to automate the programming a little bit and then copy the results to a real Commodore. Still, it takes a long time and I'm running out of time!My Halloween Project Pages:

Kes you can run it, but you need a regular micro controller, not necessarily something with a parallel ability (incidentally all micro controllers have a 'parallel' ability.
The kit 74 is run off of a ULN2803A, once you get into micro controllers you find that this IC becomes your new best friend, because the kit74 already has one then you can hook the uC directly to the Kit 74
