We have had a lot of fun with a "Haunted Ouija Board" prop at our parties. We take the Ouija Board out of the box and tape about 5 or 6 strong magnets on the back of it, varying the polarity of them. Then the board is placed back inside the box on the raised cardboard insert that it comes in. We glue another magnet on the bottom of the plastic planchette. Then we just leave it out on the table by the food or beverages.
Inevitably a party guest pushes the planchette on the board out of curiosity. Depending upon the polarity of the magnet on the back of the board, the planchette will either jump toward a letter with a magnet under it, or flip up off the board if the polarity of the magnet opposes the one on the planchette. The look on the faces of those who see it is awesome.
Some folks will say this is dangerous, as you are opening a portal for spirits and demons. We're not superstitious and have never had any problems or unwelcomed "guests' arising out of the masonite and plastic game. It is a harmless and inexpensive special effect to make and really shocks those who try it. We used rare earth magnets from Radio Shack. With the stronger magnets, the plastic planchette would literally flip up about 4 inches in the air and land upside down.
***Please note that if you choose to try this, I am not responsible for any demon infestations or tears in the space-time continuum that might develop as a result of using this special effect prop. We've never had a problem, but we have had a lot of fun with it!

Give it a try. It is a cool effect, especially if you already have the board. Let us know how you make out with it. It has great startle value.

Ooo! I made a Ouija board a couple of weeks ago, and I recently decided not to put it out this year (not enough room, and I haven't made a pointer yet). But, since it's made from foam board, I can embed magnets in the underside. Good idea, Wolfbeard! Now I may have to find a way to fit the Ouija board in.

Awesome idea. I think we might try this, put it out after everyone has had a couple drinks. That should be fun to watch.
