I bet plain old spackle would work. It's alot like icing and it dries hard.

Caulk should also work really well for that. When I use it around the house, I am struck at how similar it is to icing.

    Hi Witch

Hope your projects are coming along nicely.

I recommend trying automotive body filler.

You can find it at Canadian Tire in the automotive paint section.

The advantages are it looks and handles exactly like icing, is very resilient, can be sanded and painted, and, most importantly, is relatively cheap.

The only caveat is you will want to use moderate batches at a time - it's sort of a resin/hardener mixture - as it dries and hardens very (very) quickly.

There are usually some body filler scrapers - they are like spatulas without handles - being sold in the same section. They are very cheap but indispensable for working the stuff.

I had leftovers from a project I did repairing some metal outdoor furniture. I use it all the time on Halloween projects, in particular when I need to permanently bond things together. It works on all sorts of material.

    Best,

    JD

Or, you really can ice the cake with royal icing. It dries very hard, and lasts for years. It has a smoooth, matt finish, and holds color very well!

    2 large egg whites

    2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

3 cups (330 grams) confectioners (powdered or icing) sugar, sifted
In the bowl of your electric mixer (or with a hand mixer), beat the egg whites with the lemon juice. Add the sifted powdered sugar and beat on low speed until combined and smooth. The icing needs to be used immediately or transferred to an airtight container as royal icing hardens when exposed to air. Cover with plastic wrap when not in use.

I was thinking the same thing. Royal icing dries as hard as plaster.

Same suggestion here - royal icing. That's what most cake shops use for the permanent displays. You can color it if you want, and use it as you would a buttercream. Dries rock hard. Okay, now I'm hungry for same cake
