    The shorter the distance the easier the human eye picks up the pattern, unless you use a pattern that is easy to hide.

    I am not sure if you are amember of hauntspace, but this guy did one that you walk across, and I think he was blowing fog across it as well:

    Look through his picture gallery for more views of how he did it.

    I found it interesting that he light it indirectly, through the slats so that you don't see the typical light fixture repeated endlessly. This allowed him to only make the pit 13" deep in total.

    Perhaps you could do something similar in your hallway, with a indirect soffit light.
