Where can I purchase inexpensive microphone/speakers in order to have my characters project there voices during my haunt? thanks

they do still sell the 'mr. microphone' type products - unfortunately they don't work very well. usually the range is less then 5 feet adn its reliability is iffy at best. I think most people use powered computer speakers and cheap boom boxes. Both can be found cheaply on craigslist.
Now if you're talking 'live' action with a microphone, well, you'll need more stuff. either a PA system set up or a mini mixer.

Try looking for Shure LX series, a lot of companies are throwing them out due to the fact that they will be illegal to use in Feb 2009 when the VHF TV frequencies that they hide between get taken over by the cell phone companies - so you get to use them for this season.

Here is what I use, it's cheap and works well,
