Sometimes working in retail pays if you are an home haunter ...
Yesterday I was asked by a work colleague if I could use a mannequin. It turned out that the apparel department had a 6 ft full body (although headless) mannequin, but there was some damage to it, and one of the arms was not able to stay attached, and it would have likely been thrown in the garbage compactor. After speaking to the apparel manager, I was given permission to take this, but due to some rule I had to pay a nominal amount - so the cost to me was 25c ! - This may be the body for my Reaper ...
Today I managed to rescue two pieces of styrofoam, 17 in x 25in x 4 in (ideal for a couple of small tombstones)
Also there was a delivery of candy and some of the goods were shipped in a styrofoam box 22 in x 18 in x 12 in - ideal for a fog chiller
The styrofoam items cost me 5c total !!
I think that was 30c well spent and invested![]()

Man o' man. That stuff always makes me pout. I work from home now so freebies for me.
I did almost run into a butt-load of cardboard yesterday. Literally a butt-load. That's what it said on the truck...
My wife participated, with her company, in a cardboard boat race yesterday. Teams got 8 large sheets of cardboard, a roll of duct tape and an hour and a half to create a boat. They paddle around a few bouys and back. HILARIOUS. BUT, lots of teams didnt' use all their cardboard. Well... I came late to watch the actual race and my wife didn't secure any cardboard. It was all claimed. I told her she's sleeping on the couch.

I lucked into a TRUCKLOAD (yes, a full semi truck) load of 2 x 12's of various lengths, 12', 14', 16' and 18'. Do you think any of it will be used for props? Heck no, because I'm terrified of the saw, and getting my DH to finish even 1 project is like pulling teeth. We don't have a garage to work in, so all the wood went to my sister's house (which is where my party is) and it's "supposed" to be used for the barn. I'll be you all the pumpkins in the patch that it's still sitting in the yard, rotting, come NEXT Halloween. Okay, I'll stop ranting now.
Great luck on the mannequin, I'm gonna have to buy one from Ebay to get my gravedigger done. Hubby says he'd rather me pay the $ than have to build a life size prop from scratch...grrrr.

I can really sympathize with your fear of sawing. I don't do it myself and whenever Pieter gets his power tools out, my brain starts rehashing all the first aid stuff I learned in case I need to use it! Sometimes I can't even watch.

My deal was not as good as your .30 but I think I lucked out a well. My son's friends mom is moving and has a TON of halloween stuff, she told me to come check it so of course I did. I walked away with 9 mannequins, 6 strobe lights, 2 fog machines, 2 HUGE bins of costumes and fabric, a 5 ft. mummy, 2 motorized props(that I plan on taking apart and using for some new things I'll post when complete) and a bunch of other great items for $150. I was happy!!!! My husbands first thought was were are we going to store all this!LOL!
