I wanted to start a thread that highlights the small details that are added to displays, that are important. I usually put a few black roses in front of a grave, 2-3 lanterns scattered throughout the walkthrough, and I like adding spiderwebs from a web shooter. I also use distressed burlap in a few places. Please add to the list!

We also use a few lanterns in various out of the way places for ambient lighting. Random carved jack o lanterns are also placed around the display (we normally carve about 10). I bring in a few crooked and spooky shaped branches to place in my graveyard (held up with rebar) and hang some bats from these. A few baskets of leaves are also strewn around to give it a neglected look.
I also put away anything that doesn't pertain to the display; yard furniture, garden hoses, flags, political signs, birdbaths, etc..
IMO, these detract from the effect. I'm al about detail, but also know that the average visitor on Halloween night will be looking at your stuff for less than a minute before moving on. Just try to leave them with a lasting impression!
