    Ok,

I've one of those folks who love the bats and ghosts on the string that "fly" from side to side but the only way to set them off I've found is with clapping.

Well by the end of the night, my poor hands are beat read from all the constant clapping! Is there a simple sound effect that will set them off that doesn't require the brutal beating of two hands together?

Try a clicker. It's a training "tool" for animals. They are small, easily held in your hand, and you just press the metal tab and it makes a clicking sound. I used one last year for a couple of props that weren't as dependable as I had hoped. If clapping worked, the clicker should. At worst you'll be out a couple bucks. Get one at most larger pet stores... call first to save a trip (and they really are a wonderful way to train an animal, taught my horse to fetch). Otherwise, you could try two 2x4s and clap them together... just don't get your fingers smacked!
So come up to the lab and see what's on the slab.
