After about 4 months of trial and error, I finally finished my haunted bookshelf for my Haunted Castle.
I started out by getting several books at the thrift store and cutting all the pages out, except for the top inch or so, so that viewing it from the top, it still looks like the books were intact. I then put foam inside and attached an eye hook into the foam for the wire that would be attached to the motor in the back.

I started off trying to use a rotisserie motor, but the sound was driving me crazy.
I then tried a reindeer motor (even order a couple of them), but it would stop every now and then.

I decided to break down and buy a wiper motor and connector from monsterguts.com and VIOLA!! it works like a dream.

I had also tried so many different cams. I don't know anything about welding or using blow torches to bend metal, so first I tried bending 1/4" copper tubing, which didn't work because it kept of bending different ways when attaching it to the books. Then I tried to use PVC, but the smallest I could find was 1/2", and with the connectors, it was just a mess. The connecter kept on loosening up, even with gorilla glue. Plus finding eye bolts long enough to screw into the wood and that would easily fit the 1/2" tube was hard.
I finally went back to Lowes and decided to use the flat aluminum bar which I could easily affix to the wiper motor, and then easily being able to bend it and using some plastic tubes (don't know what they're called) that fit the aluminum bar perfectly, still give them enough play to rotate.

I used the same plastic tube to attach the metal strap to the bar which would hold the wire "bar" that would move the books in and out.

After I tried for over 4 months to get this project straight, I think I finally came up with a good solution.

I still have to paint the foam to make it look like a shelf, but I couldn't wait to show everyone!!

Here's the back: (The clicking sound is something my camera is doing, the bookshelf is actually very quiet, except for the books sliding in and out)

There will come a time when you have a chance to do the right thing.
I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by.
