When i switch it from off to sensor, it turns on and does what it's supposed to, but after that it doesn't work when i move in front of it. Does anyone have this problem and know how to fix it. I can't return it because it was bought out of town.

Should i take it apart and try to fix it, or turn it into something else?

First, be sure the amount of light coming in isn't preventing you from tripping the sensor.
When did you buy it, and do you still have the receipt? Gemmy will replace defective items within 90 days of purchase - with a receipt.
Good luck.

The light sensors they use are not really rocket science, they look for any quick change in light level. Make sure there is nothing (hair.......) blocking the hole where the light sensor is. Test it with some light in the room. They usually need some ambient light before the sensor can see anything. I had a similar problem with a couple of Donna the Dead dropping heads.
You might try some fresh batteries too.
