Hi all,
I need help with the fiberglassing of a fake rock. So far I put the pvc together into the form I need. Then today I put on the chicken wire to make more of a rock form. I would like to put fiberglass over this but, I'm not sure if I need to put down cloth first or not? Can I use an old sheet and put it on the chicken wire? I did an old wood model chris craft before and there was like a poly mix and sheets of disolving cloth. Is this what the fiberglass will be like? In advance I will say I do NOT want to use clay, mud or plaster of paris. This is a pneumatic rock that will lift up and then slam back down onto my lawn so it needs to be pretty strong and not crack.
Thanks all,
Growler

Can use any fabric i like the mat and material like jogging pants are made from but i can strech it tight and staple to wood sounds like you going to have a issue with streching it and stapling it to pvc. What ever fabric you use use a chip brush and dab the resin into the mat and mix small amounts at a time so it doesnt harden on you to soon. Make sure vertilation and wear gloves.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I screwed the chicken wire to the pvc. I can always unscrew the bolts and stretch the sheet. Then bolt the sheet down to the pvc/chicken wire once I stretch it. Will this work?
Thanks,

I was going to put the material over all the pvc/chickenwire. The whole outside is going to be covered. It's going to be hollow because, I have a spider going in under the rock. Check out my photo album and you might get an idea of what I'm talking about.

Ok heres what i would do i would take masking tape and tape all over the chicken wire to cover all the holes plus you can help in shaping it before fiberglass. Then take strips of fiber glass mat and dip in the resin and lay on the tape then repeat. Hope this helps. Remember not to use to much hardener it will dry too fast. Small batches at a time

Thanks a bunch for the help. Do you know if I can use any type of tape? That way I'll pick up some really wide stuff.

I wouldnt think it matters on the tape all the tape does it gives you a surface to lay the mat on without getting hung in the holes and resin dripping everywhere.
