Has anyone ever added bulk or made shapes using this method?

Crumple newspaper or scrap paper and lash together with 2-3 inch wide paper packing tape. Once shape has been achieved, cover with paper packing tape and paint.

    Done.

It seems like a simpler method for construction of static props, like tree trunks or scarecrows or faux rocks. Is there a problem here I don't foresee, something I'm missing?

I used masking tape over newspaperchicken wire, 50/50 glue and water. It worked okay on the rocks I made. I taped balled up newspaper around a cardboard box as ghostess described in one of her tutorials. The wall was a bit tougher though. I taped big sheets of news paper down first as a base then added the smaller papers on top.
Since it was so big and flexible it started to pooch and rip(due to the chicken wire and weather). Not so much of a tape problem, more of a design problem. It was my first time.

I used a similar technique with my "Hell Well". The rocks around the figure are newspapers all bundled up together and taped down to the cardboard base. I then just used larger sheets of newspaper to make a complete 'cover' for them.
