Anybody know where I can purchase a strobe light that is sound activated? So lets say a sound of thunder plays, the strobe would turn on and than off when the sound stops.

I think you can hook a strobe light to one of these:

Lighting FX < Halloween Props < Fright Catalog, Inc.

and it will do what you want.

Are you trying to simulate lightning? if you are you may not want to use a strobe light but just a super bright bulb. there was a thread on this earlier:

    Great deal on Lightning/Thunder box!

Could you just take a regular strobe light and plug it into one of those cheap Thunder/Lightning FX devices?
It can either hear the sound thru the microphone or you can patch it from your stereo with an (RCA to mini plug) cord to activate the light.

Well the effect is going to be inside. you'll be looking out a curtained window and there will be thunder with a few flashes. I've looked at the izombie but it's a little much for what I want to do. If it were an out door effect than I would purchase it. I wonder how a lighning/thunder box is, I mean, if it works good. I found this. Chauvet ST1000S Techno StrobeLight - PlanetDJ.com Someone said they used this before and it worked great.

I was surprised at how well the cheapo thunder/lightning box worked when I tested it last year.
I mainly used the patch cord, but the mic has a sensitivity control.
It even comes with a CD of different thunder sounds.
Some people use the photo flood bulbs (available at camera stores) for really bright flashes in addition to a strobe light.

Agreed, what I use is the Lighting FX Unit and have it hooked up to several strobes and flood lights outside our windows. I then have a large fan blowing the curtains a tad. Looks very spooky!

Last year we used the fx with mini stobes, just like the suggestion of DaveintheGrave and Bradbaum. We used three minis set at different flash intervals. We had a couple of very large speakers and added a sub woofer (from our home theater system HA). We got great vibration and effect from the speakers, and both the fx and mini strobes are adjustable so you get the lightning effect you want. Oh, we hooked the speakers etc to a cd player with lightning sounds we pulled off the internet. Mixed up several different sounds, and then set it on replay. It was set at pause until it was time to use. Ours was set outside and flashed at a couple of windows.
Actually, it was kind of cheesy when I think about it, but it was actually a good little startle... built some anticipation. We guided the victims to a spot where witches would taunt them before (ohhh, you smell tasty) sending them along. They had a code word "beware" which signaled the sound/light guy that they were in the right place, the thunder boomed, inside lights went out, and lightening flickered. They then had to enter a "cave" with bat's eyes (string of store bought mini LEDs )
OK, that was more than you asked for, but it was sooooo fun! I can't believe it's only 100 days!!!!!!
So come up to the lab and see what's on the slab.

Chiming in a bit late, but the Lightening FX box really is a great little gadget, especially for the price.

You can get a jack that will hook the light(s) directly into the sound source, so it won't react from ambient sound - only the soundtrack you're playing. It also works well with it just set in front of speakers.

You can plug in a power strip and get several lights involved, but I think it's limited to 500 watts (I think?) maximum, so make sure your bulbs are within range so you don't mess it up.

Best price I've seen is at Spilsbury - $12.99. Good place!
