Anyone done this?
I made the wire armatures for the shoulders and arms (jointed at the shoulder, elbow and no hands) but I wonder what it would look like if you didn't do any armature at all - too spaghetti armed?
I really want a light and ghostly look, so I am debating about leaving the arms in there.
I also didn't do the whitener/detergent before I started applying my cheesecloth, so I'm going to have to go back over her once I get everything the way I want it. Can I use powdered detergent dissolved in a spray bottle, or better to just get some florescent paint and spray that on? What about bluing? Or Quinine? Just wondering if this will work or not since I screwed up a step.

Hey I just finished mine, but I am no expert though. Weighing my styrofoam head and armature altogether comes in a little over 2 pounds.
As for the ghost like appearance without the armatures...it probably could be done if you could figure out how to keep the sleeves from sliding up and down. If your using string or some other method. I don't have hands on mine either, I used shower rings for wrists. I don't think it would be too spaghetti armed, as long as you anchor the cloth where the wrist will be.
I don't think powdered detergent would work though. You need some liquid detergent with bluing in it for the right effect. Bluing is what gives the detergent the blue tint. I suppose you could water it down a little and put it in a spray bottle. Just let it air dryWhy rule the living when you can control the dead.

I've seen FCGs with no armature for the shoulders/arms. They were basically a styro head with a lot of fabric draped over it. The 2 "arm" attachment points were on the fabric itself--no fishing line or anything. The effect struck me more as a ghostly jellyfish instead of a human ghost. Pieces of fabric on either side of the head flapping up and down don't suggest arms as much as tentacles

Another potential issue with not having arms and shoulders is balance. The head might bob around and try to twist if it's not "anchored" by the weight of the shoulders and arms.
You could always try flying a ghostie with no framework, just to see how it works out. Come to think of it, a trio of "minimalist" ghosties bobbing around might be pretty cool. A big styro ball from a craft store for each ghostie's "head," draped in fabric and suspended from each attachment point.
Dadgummit. Just what I need. Another idea to test out... If I can find my FCG rig in our over-stuffed storage unit
