What do you do to cover the entire burlap so that the little holes arent showing? I made a prop last year using MM and burlap and it was almost impossible to cover the holes. What am I doing wrong? Are there different types of Burlap? One with maybe a tighter weave and less porus that I dont know about? I use the stuff at Lowes in the Garden center. Thanks!

Try a local fabric store. I found a tight burlap in black. I can't remember the cost per yard but it didn't break the bank. In Seattle the store is called Joanns.

OK great, thanks! Wasnt sure if a fabric store would be too pricey, but I will check them out.

I think if you just try making your mud thicker you will be ok. I use the garden center type and I haven't had a problem.

I use the burlap that you can get from Lowes in the garden center....I dont worry about filling in all of the little holes. I do my first layer in MM to get the creation formed and then will add another layer in areas that I feel need thickening. You dont notice the little holes at night unless you went way lite on the MM. Make sure you are plunging the burlap into the MM and getting it fully saturated before placing it on your frame. Run it through your fingers to get the excess MM offas you remove it from the bucket to get the excess off.

yeah maybe I should have added a second layed on my first shot at MM. I think I'll try that with what I have left over and that doesnt work I'll try the other Burlap, Thanks!

I agree with dark star... I happen to be using MM today, and since I don't have burlap I'm putting it on cheesecloth. Of course, there are lots of large holes with this but I let it dry, the use thicker mud and "paint" it on and it sticks well and covers all the holes. HTH
So come up to the lab and see what's on the slab.

I also agree with Dark Star. Making your MM thick should solves alot of your problems. Using a second coat will really help. Make sure your first coat dries for at least 24 hrs. I've used this process the last 5 years and it has worked well for me. Also, its worth investing in a "professional" mixer bit to make your MM.
