I was at Michael's specifically looking for some cheapy angels or cherubs for placing on top of some 3 foot columns on the front of my mausoleum. (half columns flanking the door, possibly having some candles above or in the angels hands).
I found these:
They are about 8 inches tall, made from resin (lightweight) and made for painting. Nauseatingly cute, aren't they?
I got them both for $8 (you can see the angel on the left had a top-of-the-wingetomy that I repaired with clay)
So here is the basecoat of a dark gray with almost black in the really recessed areas:
I used acrylic paints (I have tons - I'm an artist).
After the base coat dried, I got out white paint, and a dry brush and stippled/dry brushed white onto the high points (stabbing motion with almost all of the paint blotted off first). By varying the brush angles I actually achieved a stone effect. I finished up with a tiny brush loaded with black paint to hit the weather marks (like around the eyes) and took another dry brush to knock down the edges.
I think for $4 each, these are going to look pretty darn good! I'm thinking of adding a flicker tealight to their hands...![]()

It actually is really easy - three colors: black white and gray. Coat the whole thing (whatever you're painting, doesn't have to be tacky angels
) with the gray, get the deep areas with slashes of black, let it dry, then dip the very tiniest bit of white onto the tips of a dry brush and start stabbing at the thing on all the areas that stick up, stick out or are on top. You can use a second dry brush to blend the white (still stabbing, just don't put any paint on that brush) You get the hang of it pretty quick!
Thanks everyone for the nice comments! I LOVE that they were so "old lady" tacky before.
It makes the difference pretty startling when I see the finished one sitting next to the cutsy one.

Those are great! I am always on the lookout for angels that I can paint but stayed away from really cutesy ones. You've proved they can work just as well!
I bought a large virgin mary statue recently with missing fingers for only a buck. I debated leaving her "as is" because statues DO deteriorate but since I had just purchased some Mighty Putty(great stuff BTW)...I ended up making her whole again. Just need to come up with a stone design to attach her to.

Those are awesome Frankie's Girl! I had seen them in Michael's but never thought them usable...guess that's why you're the artist!
Looking forward to seeing them in place at your haunt.
