I bought all the supplies I would need for my graveyard fence, I'm making ten
8 foot sections, 4 ft tall.
I cut all the pipe to the height I wanted and then yesterday I drilled holes in all the 1X2s instead of only doing one section to check distance between pipes. For whatever reason I chose 11 inches between pipes, and while it looks fine, I had my 16 yr old try to squeeze through them and sure enough, right through.
I just redrilled one section making the pipes 9 inches apart and he can still get through, (skinny little freak) tomorrow I'm going to make it 6 inches apart and see if it looks stupid that close together. At least no one could get through.
But oh well, this is the first thing I've built and I'm still very excited about it. When I get this done, I can start on my trio of witches with a stirring cauldron made from a spinning light ball type thing.

It happens. At worst you'll have to buy more 1x2s right? I made a fence last year based off someone's plans titled "Simple Fancy Fence". About half way through the process my husband throws down a 1x2 and says, "Whoever called this simple is insane!" I feel your frustration.

I made some last year and mine were 6 inches apart. I can't believe he squeezed through 9 inches.
It is tough but it looks really good when you're done though.

do you guys use two 1X2s, or 3, two at the top fairly close and then the one, a few inches from the bottom.

What i have done in the past is to put it down on paper first. The coffin I made came out good but one section was still too long. It happens to us all. We feel you pain.

I think real fences are coded at 4 to 4 1/2" between ballasters, but 6" is good enough for a prop fence.
Have you looked at King Architectural for finials? They have a nice selection of plastic ones that are very affordable. I bought 200 to line my roof and top off some tombstones.

Better to use 1x2s. 1x3s wood look a bit wide.
I almost forgot I still have a few more sections to make this year.

dionicia, sorry I was confusing, what I meant was, do most people use 2 or 3 1X2s, I've seen some with two of the 1X2s near the top space a little bit apart and then one at the bottom. I've also seen them with just one 1x2 at the top and one at the bottom.

Trust me, you only want to use two one at the top and one at the bottom. You'll drive yourself crazy depending on how long you're making the fence.

Yeah, it looked good to me with just the one at the top and one at the bottom, except of course for the spacing thing. hee hee hee. I will start the six inch spacing tomorrow.
Thanks for all the input from everyone.
