To give that etched effect you can also just use a matte sealer. I scuffed the glass first with fine sandpaper and gave the glass a light mist. If you'd like I can dig out a couple of my bottles so you can see the look.

You could take a firecracker and slice it longways with a razor blade. Unroll it until you are right at the gunpowder. Tear off the excess paper, light the fuse and drop it into the bottle.
Instant smoky old-looking bottle. (Kind of smelly, though.)

Ive been using a frosted glass spray. I spray lightly over the bottle then get heavier towards the bottom. Then I get some green yellow black and brown acrylics and sponge them on the bottom mostly. For mold or dirt. You can scratch it up later with a hand full of dirt or mud. Looks good!
