Looks like you could make these for cheaper than buying the solar ones. I've got 3 empty coffee cans that could easily be converted. Though, I do like the narrower ones better. Good idea though.
that sounds like fun - though it would take a bit without the right tools... bench grinder for one... it still wouldnt pass close inspection - but then again im not handing lanterns out at my porch anyway... would also make a kick @$$ grave digger's lantern if your not above digging up your yard...

Hey I got a solar powered lantern that looks just like those at the Krogres for around $35.00. The light doesn't last but 2 or more hours after dusk though.
you could modify them by increasing the number of batteries, follow the "sun jar" link - it wont tell you how to do this but it will show you the guts of the device - adding more batteries should be a short hop from there... also - bear in mind you can change the color of the LED.
