Default Starting my crypt!

I am finally getting the materials for the crypt for my FCG!

We went to Lowes, and they had the big sheets of foamcore (1/2 inch - they aren't carrying the thicker foamcore anymore ) for $9.15. There were several pieces that were chewed up on the edges, so I asked if they could give me a discount, and I got 3 sheets for $8!

I still need at least 3 more sheets according to my plans, but I got enough to get started and also got the 1" x 2" and power tools (I have been doing all of my props with handtools and having to get pretty creative). I picked up a reciprocating saw, circular saw, cordless drill and a dremel. I'm finally moving up to the big time!

I'm also trying to figure out a better way to haul home all of the big stuff - I have a small suv, and the foamcore wouldn't fit into the cargo area, so DH and I had to tie the sheets to the top and drive really slow home.

I'm going to be trying to make a lightweight crypt for my FCG that can be broken down into flats for storage, and so far on paper it looks like it is going to work *fingers crossed*

It is going to be 5 feet x 6 feet, with a 3 x 5 foot opening for the FCG, and a peaked roof going up to 6 ft at its tallest. I am going to have some half columns with cornices flanking the door opening, and faux columns on the back corners. Depending on how much scrap foam I have left over, I will be adding more details/decoration. I also have two flicker candles I picked up at x-mas that I am going to try to incorporate to the front, but with the columns, they may not be added. It's going to be painted to resemble white marble, with either pinkish or grayish marble columns.

I'll be trying to take photos of the process, since if this does work, it will be pretty darn sweet. We are really running out of room in our garage and attic, so I'm sure I'm not the only one with storage issues!

I'll be starting the framing next weekend, so there may be a tutorial to come...

Sounds great Frankie's Girl... great job in getting them to give you a discount. My Lowe's won't come down on their damaged foam .

I've been contemplating building a crypt myself, but I think I'll wait til next year, see how my FCG goes this year before I build her a crypt.

Looking forward to any pictures and how-to's though...good luck

I'll be watching and waitng for updates, I want to build something similar with the key being it easily breaks down into peices for storage and reassembly!

My thoughts were to use 2x2's

I suggest that you get a "chop"saw a.k.a power miter saw, there are some pretty inexpensive ones and it works wonders for making a nice stright cut and repetive cuts of the same length!

As far as transporting the foam, purchases 2 sheets of the cheapest plywood you can find along with the foam and sandwich the foam between the plywood and strap it to the roof using tie downs.....works like a charm and no damaged foam. Reuse the plywood every time you need foam sheets. Also, there is a mausoleum that Raven Manor did that I am going to duplicate next year that does not involve foam but is easy to break down. Take a look!
