I was wondering if anyone had found anything that would work as an alternative to the talking thru boris skulls for making a skull to sing along with music.

Maybe along the lines of the 3 axis props they other haunters like HalloweenBob are working if your not wanting to also move around. they may be able to help you out.

You could do a douglas fir tree/Bucky hack. I made 4 of them 2 years ago and they are pretty easy. The hard part will be finding the trees. There are several tutorials, but the one I used was Talking Skull.

It is pretty easy to add a servo to just do the jaw movement to a bucky or lindberg skull.

If you don't want to go the VSA or PROP-SX route you can use scary terrys audio to servo board:

    AutoTalk Controller - E2
Blue Point Engineering Inc. - Sound Devices / Equipment / Supplies

or if you can find a skull or Dougie tree with the DC motors:

    index

This circuit is pretty easy to build.

Here's the Dougie face mechanism (without the tree) for $13.00:

No I haven't. I was thinking about ordering one, since it also has the microphone input.

I haven't used that particular Dougie, the ones I have used were in their tree forms, and didn't have microphone inputs. I stripped the tree stuff off, and ripped out the electronics - Then I added a Prop-1 to drive it, the eyes, eyelids and mouth.

The eyes light up, the eyelids open and close and the mouth moves.
