There are so many different ways to go with prop control. There are PC based systems and stand alone systems. You can program a system to simply repeat a routine or it can be interactive. I personaly use a software program called VSA to control a programmed "show". I also use a Prop2 controller for another scene. If you have little or no experience with electronics, I highly recommend getting a "What's a Microcontroller" kit. RadioShack.com This will teach you basic circuit building and programming skills. It even comes with a servo!
If you want to just jump right into PC control, you can download a free trial version of VSA to see what you can do with it. Visual Show Automation - Downloads
These are only 2 of many ways to go with prop control.
You will no doubt get many opinions as to what you "need" to have or what is the "best" way to do something. Weigh each according to your individual needs. Now is when the real fun begins...I don't want to just scare them... I want to mess them up for life!
