I want to buy the equipment to start experimenting with airbrush painting my props but am completely new to it. I'd like to keep the expense under $100...is that achievable or will I need to rethink my budget? What type of gun do you suggest - gravity fed or jar? What size air compressor is best (I'll most likely only be using it for airbrushing)? What accessories are needed to get started or are a must-have for haunters? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Don't go with a gravity fed...unless you plan on doing fine detalis such as veins and eyeballs.
You got single action and double action. The learning curve is a little higher with double action but you can do alot more with it. For general detail I would go with a single action. you can get a good one for about $10. Go with a cheap compressor or better yet until you decide that this is what you want to do you can use compressed air. Then if you like it go for a better gun and get a compressor that you can use for other aspects of your Haunt.

I use several different airbrushes. My favorite for general all around work is a Badger 175 internal mix dual action. If you get coupons from Michaels you can get up to 50% off. You might even want to start with a less expensive siphon model if all you want to do is shading and such. They also carry diaphram compressors at Michaels. Those coupons can save you some serious money. As with any spray painting equipment, cleaning it properly is the most important skill you can have.
I don't want to just scare them... I want to mess them up for life!

I have been an ("GUN SLINGER") Airbrush artist for 22+ years ("Young Gun" is an Airbrush artist of under 10 years) LOL
BearAir.com there a Pashe Double action (#3 tip and Cone) gun only for abut $30.00 (bottle feed) This not the KIT!!!($50-60) ***you can get caps for around $3-5 with glass or plastic jars or with the jar: and just use baby food jars {and 3 letter coke capes; to refit the mettle lid and connecter to prevent rusting over time.}
the tips are interchangeable
1. #1 fine to detail work
2. #3 Middle of the road and a best all-round to learn with.
3. #5 wide to use on larger areas for faster coverage.
you will also need a Pashe hose. about $12-15.
and the coupler to connect to the fitting on the Compressor.
and Teflon (pipe) tape to wrap all of the fittings/connections
any compressor will work that can provide 32-35Lbs. of pressure at a stedy flow.
I got a 5 horse power at the Big lots for under $90.00
there are other air sources to think of if you are just starting out there is a Diaphragm; but, they can make a puttering effect in the airflow.
You may also need a moisture trap between the compressor and the Gun. there are inline trap or ones that fit onto the compressor and then the hose connects to that (About $15 - 25.).
Airbrush Action is a great source of info and I would be happy to help also. with info on creating effects equipment, and ETC.
