Thread: Realisting looking UFO flying over your house

Before you attempt this, be sure to let people in your neighborhood that you are going to have a UFO prop flying over your house so it does not get everyone in a panic.

This is a fairly simple idea that I came up with one year.

Materials:

1 ea 36" Black Helium filled balloon
1 ea fishing swivel
6 ea LED lights powered by watch batteries
6 ea paper funnel drinking cups (you can make these)
1 ea roll of double sided tape
1 ea roll of fishing string

Assembly:

Attach the LED lights evenly spaced on the side of the balloon pointing down or outwards with double sided tape. Do not attempt to remove once attached, it does not have to be perfect and the balloon could pop. Between each LED light, attach the paper funnel cups using the tape with all of them facing the same direction. This will create a pinwheel affect.

The balloon will usually come with a ribbon string attached to the bottom of the balloon. Using the ribbon string, tie one end of the fishing swivel to it and then tie the fishing string to the other end.

I released the balloon about 100 feet into the air and it could be seen for at least two miles. As the light wind blew across the cups the balloon spun in one direction causing the LED lights to turn in the sky. Pretty neat effect which had everyone puzzled how I did it.

My neighbor across the street went as far as to get a camera and took pictures because he thought he was seeing a real UFO.

You can add to the effect by using additional balloons with a colored glow stick tied to the bottom of each one. People will see a spinning UFO with colored lights flying around the night sky.

Be aware of power lines, however, if your balloon gets tangled, the fishing string is non conductive. The balloon will eventually come down.

This Mischief sounds safer than the old two cleaners bags taped together with burning candles underneath.
The little candles would make the tall bag glow at night and the movements seemed very strange and random, which of course they were.
I would never release such a possible time bomb to set some elses property afire, the guy who did it was a lawyer..at the time.

Sounds silmilar to the Phoenix lights hoax. A guy tied balloons to flares and released them 30 seconds apart. Th wind made them arrange in patterns that changed and were visible for miles.

You got any pictures of it floating?

My uncle once told a story of when he was young and a UFO he made that got the Government’s attention.

He said he used dowel rods and made a hoop about 8 feet across.
And then took several thinner dowels and made the ribs or frame.
Covered it with tin foil and filled 4 plastic trash bags with Helium and painted UFO on the side.

He then let it go into the air and the wind blowing thought the valley.... runs toward OAK RIDGE, TN.
He then said after about 20-30 minuets a pair of jet went over in the direction the craft had headed. It was in the early 50's..... I guess.
