Up to this point, the only props I have built are static, due to my lack of knowlegde of motors. This year, for my pirate display, I want to add a pirate skeleton that slowly pops out of one of my old wine barrels. What is the best kind of motor to use for this?

Depends on weight of the prop.. But Wiper Motors are always good.. Lots of torque , easy to source and relatively inexpensive

I got mine at www.monsterguts.com. They also carry power supplies and any other stuff you might need.

I got mine from a local wrecker.. Typically you can pick em up for like $5 from a remove it yourself yard. Then use a wall wart of the approriate voltage to get the speed you want. Or as Chili put it Dean at Monster Guts has power supplies and or kits (wiper motor and PS ) available for a good price.

Another big thumbs up for Monster Guts. I knew NOTHING about motors, and probably pestered the crap out of Dean, and he was nothing but nice and answered all of my questions. The motor I got was an all-in-one and basically all I had to do is figure out how to animate my prop, and build the extra pieces and attach them, then plug it in.

Here is a page that may help you with your motor:

And of course Scary Terry's page is pretty much required reading on the subject:

As a note on this motor, because of the circuitry for the self parking feature, this particular motor really doesn't like to run at voltages other than 12 volts, without some modification. In order to be run at lower voltages for reduced speed, you basically have to bypass the circuitry and connect directly to the motor.
But the self parking feature is really handy if you want the motor to stop at the same point each time (like for a Monster in a Box).

A third vote for Monster Guts. I picked up a motor and power supply from them last year for my stirring witch project.
I've ordered several items from them and have always been very satisfied.
