Ok, I started the project yesterday, but rather than doing a full skull I decided to use one of the bones from my Bag of Bones in case I messed anything up. I have a couple pics, but the whole bone hasn't yet been covered by silicone. I came up with another idea using the Wal-Mart silicone. Instead of covering one side of the bone with silicone, waiting for it to cure, then doing the rest...you could take a piece of cardboard (or wood would be better) and make a box that is barely bigger than the bone. This would serve 2 purposes: to hold the bone while it cures and to serve as the mother mold. I'm not sure if that made much sense lol, so I will do it today (hopefully) and take some pics and write up a tutorial. The tut should be ready in a couple days
I haven't forgotten to upload the pics. I haven't finished the project yet I used too much silicone and put in on too thick. When I tried to peel apart the excess silicone, I found wet silicone underneath so now I have to wait for it to dry. I'm hoping to get the plaster part done today. I'm starting to think that maybe a 3 part plaster mold would be the best route to take lol. Anyway, I will get more pics today when I get the silicone mold trimmed down (and dried) and start the plaster mother mold.
Pennywise there is a good example of casting for skulls posted by Vlad on this thread. You will find his information starting on the bottom of page 1. Good luck with your project.
Thanks I will check it. I actually just signed on to say what a stupid idea this with Wal-Mart silicone. I coated 2 bones...1 is now broken because the silicone stuck to it in spots and the force of me trying to remove it snapped the foam bone, the other is a nightmare gettiong the silicone off. There musr be another way, so I will check out the thread
Make that 2 broken bones. For some reason the silicone (which isn't suppsoed to stick to anything) is sticking firmly to my foam bones and making my life miserable. I will try to find another cheap alternative for make skull molds. I need a lot of skulls by midsummer so we can corpse them for our haunt. I have successfully done paper mache skuls, but the time it takes to make them is simply unreal. In fact I have one room designed that has the walls covered with bones and skulls, so I don't know if paper mache is even practical.
I found this link while browsing and its most likely your best bet a bit pricey but worth it in the long run and the mold will hopefully get you years of use if you take care of it.
Thanks guys. I remembered trying to follow a tutorial from a few years ago where the Wal-Mart silicone was placed thinly over a skull, then a plaster mother mold was made over it. The skulls were made of Great Stuff. I thought I would try it out, but I failed miserably. I am totally broke so I can't afford to buy professional molding/casting supplies I was looking for something faster than paper mache, but since I have been successful with it then I'll stick to that
Pennywise, I realize that this thread is nearly a month old, but if you're still interested in finding the silicone\p.o.p. 2 part matrix mold tutorial, I can prolly help ya out. I'm pretty sure I have it saved somewhere around here, shouldn't be too difficult to locate. However if I'm wrong and I can't find it, I had planned on posting a video tutorial which demonstrates my new, improved, updated: "simply easier 'n' less mess technique;" which basically uses the same ideas & fundamentals with a few improvements I discovered last year that **can** reduce the time & mess, while improving accessibility, output & results!! And although I wasn't gonna make the tutorial for another month or two, I could go ahead & make it now before I forget to do it altogether! Lemme know if you are interested still, and I'll try & find it for ya; or go ahead & get busy on making my "simply easier 'n' less mess technique" tutorial I have planned.
**assuming it isn't dropped on the ground before it's ready to be put in place. which has happened before, and still turns out okay; it just changes the title to "shoulda been simply easier-but now-hella mess technique!**
