I am trying to come up with a way to have a spider drop suddenly and then return to its original location until it can be triggered again. Any ideas?

Pneumatics is the easiest, if this is not an option you need some kind of motor/cam/clutch arrangement

There used to be a Halloween scare on the market called the "Bungee Jumping Spider of Doom". It was sound activated and would drop and then rewind while its legs wiggled. The spider body was kinf of corny-looking but could likely be replaced as could the triggering system. The last I heard about a source for them was on a web site that sold them as woodpecker deterrents. When the bird hammers your house, the spider drops and scares it away. Here's a link:
