Thread: Please help me choose a cemetery gate column

Sorry for the double post because I started this in another thread, but I wanted to post this with a poll.

I've mocked up 4 different designs of columns, some more elaborate (but not necessarily better) than others. After working on these, I'm really torn on which ones to go with.

Can any of you help me with which you think would look best... 1, 2, 3, or 4 and let me know why? I absolutely have no favorites at this point. I feel comfortable that I'd be able to create any of these designs. Just so you know, the darker shades of grey represent recessed areas. If you feel there are portions from different designs that might look better together, please let me know and I'll try it out.

wow... 100% of us like #3!!! Oh. wait. I'm the only one that's voted so far....

I agree with crazybob--3's the one. Although 2 & 4 are very cool, they look more Roman than gothic to me, and if you're going for a creepy old gothic look, well... Also, 3 is better than #1, simply because it's more ornate with the split column design, and compliments the lantern hanging on it more.

Anyway......that's my humble opinion.

Same here...3 looks the best. Not to much detail but just enough.

#3..............The other ones with dental molding don't look old enough. #3 would look awesome with moss and some nasty run-off oozing down it. It would look even better with an aged bronze plaque just below the light.......SWEET!!

I voted for 3 too. That's exactly the look I want so be sure to post your progress (so I can copy)!

SpookyChicks, I promise to take notes and pictures to post in the tutorials section when I finally start my columns this spring. Thanks for all for voting and the very helpful comments! You guys rock! I wish you all were my neighbors so we could work on projects together. Either that or we'd keep our projects top secret and all try to outdo each other's displays. But it'd be fun having costume parties with several other people that share the same enthusiasm.

I have to say, I'm a little surprized with the poll outcome so far! Not that I disagree at all, but I really thought many would vote for 4. I'm really glad that I'm getting opinions on what other's think. Anyhow, anyone who hasn't done so already, please vote and let me know your thoughts on why you feel the way you do about a certain column! Don't feel pressure to vote for the same one that others have. I love to play devil's advocate, even when I do agree with the rest. It's so fun to watch people get worked up when I actually agree with their point of few.
