I'm designing a gate entrance to my front yard cemetery for this year. I'm super anal and basically built a fence & gate in Excel so that I could play with different possible entrances, and this is the one that looked best to me so far.

Measurements of the posts on the fence are 4ft. New columns would be about 6ft. highest point of the top of the gate entrance would be 7ft. I don't want to make another set in a few years if I can help it, so I'm looking to make these as good as possible. I may add a name over the top at a later date, but that's not in the plans for this year. Any opinions on this? Possible improvements? Perhaps you have a design for the the "wrought iron"? Do you think the gate tops should come to a sharper point, or should be taller than 7ft?

I know my plans are a bit over the top, but it only took me about 30 minutes to do and I enjoyed doing it. I really wanted to get a feel for how it would look. All the dimensions are pretty much to scale. I designed my first PVC fence like this last year and was thrilled with how it came out.

Very cool, I think it looks great. I have no suggestions to make it look better, because it already looks awesome. Oh wait you need to get an old rusty chain to "lock" it.

Thanks! I agree about the chain and old rusty lock. The chain is the easy part because I can buy a 6ft one just about anywhere. The lock will be a little bit of a challenge. The one or two on eBay are way overpriced, so I may have to sculpt one out of foam unless I wait until Halloween approaches when I might find more online and a little cheaper.

It would be easy to sculpt a lock out of foam and paint it up to look like old rusty metal. Just sculpt the lock body separate from the hasp and you can fasten it around the chain.

    Looks really good!

I bought one last year that was made out of foam, already aged and rusted.
I can't remember, but I think it was at Kmart. It is about the size of my hand, looks pretty real, and cost under $5.00. Looks great with that big foam chain.

If you plan on putting a name over the gates you may want to consider the main post to be taller, 6 ft is cutting it kinda close

That sounds perfect, but I have a question regarding the foam lock you purchased. Does it allow you go pull the shackle out to slip the links of the chain in? To me that's a big key to getting the proper lock. If not, I'd have to cut links of the chain apart and glue them back together.

This is a valid point and I actually have thought of it. The sign would be at least 7ft high in the middle because the center of the gate will be 7ft tall, so it should be accommodating to letting in TOT on Halloween. Do you think that pillars that are more than 6ft might be a little overwhelming? I'd consider maybe 6.5ft, but that's as high as I'd want to go with the pillars. I just adjusted the picture and raising everything by 6" looks good, but I had to widen the pillars a few inches because they look a little anorexic at that height.

My pillars ar 12" X 13" X 8 ft with a base that measures 24" x 25", then my sign is attached between the pillars the sign is 15" in height, the pillars and sign are ~9.5'
