Wow...seems like everyones getting into the props early this year... I just built my column frames, getting ready to add my styrofoam (Blue 1/2" if anybody was wondering, because I can't afford the pink 2" right now at $27 a sheet). I haven't started my fence yet, but I will afterwards. In my planning phase, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to connect my fence to the column...

How have you all that have fences connected the 2 together?

Hey coal miner's ghost, try this word for connecting your fence to the columns, it's quick, it's easy, its called Rebar! My fence is modular and the fence post fits into a base. I slide the fence against my graveyard column and use a couple of steel rebar pieces to keep it all in place.

I used two L brackets that you can screw into the pillar. You will need to make sure there is a piece of wood for the bracket to screw into. You can then put a hole in the fencing and just lower it onto the L bracket.

Here is a few examples if this helps: http://www.homehaunt.net/images/2007...graveyard5.JPG and http://www.homehaunt.net/images/2007...graveyard7.JPG

    I hope this helps.

Got any pictures of your progress, would love to see them. I'm starting on my columns in May, right after I move.

I was planning on using L brackets as well, since my fence horizontal peices are made from wood.

I dont even attach them, My fence and gate are stand indepenent of the columns, mostly because of my uneven yard. Plus there's no telling if I'll get them in exactly the same place from year to year. But rebar is the answer most secure the fence and even my columns have a pvc tube in them that I slide over the rebar with emt over it. I do plan on expanding my cemetary this year by adding corner pillar and much more fencing and original tombstones.

I've never really tried a tutorial before, but I can give a couple of pictures I just took. Here's the link I used to build my frame:

    http://www.boneyardbargains.ca/pillars.html

instead of 2x2's, I used 2x3's I wanted more support, and they were cheaper. I made them exactly 4' tall, and 17" wide. The 4' is so I could use 1 sheet of styrofoam per column.

The second picture has a second strip of 2x3 on it because I made a mistake and cut it exactly 1 board width too short... measure twice, cut once... so I lined the top with a second row of scrap...both the same now.

I'm thinking of doing the L-bracket thing, so I'll have to add some support brackets somewhere in the middle, when I figure out my fence heighth. Wow sorry the pics are so big...gotta work on resizing them...

I just figured out I need 2 more columns, 4 altogether to cover my 40' front yard. I guess 1 every ten feet or so.

Looks amazing, I love what you did with the brick work. Please keep the photos coming.

How did you cut the box joints?

I would stay away from the 1/2" Blue foam and stick to something at least 5/8" or 1"

I use 1" on all my props and have no problems about getting adequate depth for cutting grooves and details in.

I fear that if you use 1/2" you'll go right through it VERY fast! I like to keep at LEAST 1/2" foam thickness even where my cuts are!

Nice lap joints and tenons on those column frames...they're not going anywhere!
