I've always dreamt about a coffin that is solid enough for use and will break down....i've dreamt hard enough that i figured it out ! Heres my ideas on how it would work !

I think a toe pincer coffin would work best but this ideas should work for any coffin shape!

If oyu want to use a thicker plywood, its quite simple, cut your peices and use standard 3or4" door hinges, hinges work great because you can remove the pin and the peices com apart!

MAKE SURE THEY ARE HINGES THAT COME APART!!

4 in the bottom corners 4 in the mid section and 4 in the top ! Cut your wooden peices to suite and use hinges instead of solid jointery.

Around the bottom on the inside you'll need a bit of support lip to hold up the bottom peice, this is what will keep the coffins shape!

Decorate any which way you see fit and it can be broken down into 7 peices no thicker than the wood itself, 8 if you have a lid !

If you are totally lost as to what i'm saying, i'll try and make up some diagrams and pst them, just let me know!

I know storage is a huge problem with my props, my crate beast is created by bolting the 4 sides and the lid to two inner frames.

I have built toe pinchers out of pallet wood. While they do not breakdown I do not put a backside on them so when I store them they can be placed face down across the rafters and filled with other stuff that needs storing, like a box.

If you search the site I am sure you can find many good plans for building coffins of different shapes and sizes.

I considered break down coffins, but ultimately realized that the coffins make really good storage boxes for the off-season. Plus, you can easily stand them on end or stack them (if the tops are flat).
