So we tore down the hearse and stored it until it is ready to go outside in the spring. I have been looking at the bottomless pit thread and a couple of examples on haunt project and decided to give it a go. Last night i went out and purchased all the material. I have it figured to about $130.00 to do the project. Mirror size for bottom is 24 by 30 along with plex and mirror film on top. It will stand 3'. i may start working on the foam for the stone tonight. Here are a few pics of the progress so far.

I gasped when I read 'So we tore down the hearse....' bonemanB, OH NO! It had to be done I guess, but I saw the thread this morning where you'd just made more progress on it...

Great start to your bottomless pit--when I saw that idea on the other thread I thought it was killer....man, I hope we have enough dough to make some of these props ourselves this year!

Boneman, I responded to your last thread on the hearse,,,, saw you were making this pit.

I can't wait to get started on ours... the cost is more than I was hoping though !!!
Just think, we are going to do 2 that are about 8' x3' only 12" deep.. thats gonna cost us !!!! Hope we can do it.

    Glad someone's trying it !!! It'll be a great effect !!!

Had some more time to play with the pit. I painted the whole thing, in/out flat black. I cut out the stones for one side, sanded them and painted them flat dark gray last night. The couple of small holes in the middle of the stones is where i had the bright idea to stick a screw driver through the back to try and hang on to them for paint. Gave up on that and just used my hands... glued the first set of stones on then filled in the caps with great stuff. Now we wait for all that to dry and start more painting. I am not sure if i want to do the inside in stone also. It is very time consuming. I guess i will finish one side and see if i like the results. Any other suggestions for the inside walls would be of help. At this point i am wide open for ideas. Here are a couple of pics of the progress.

I've not thought about doing the 'grout in great stuff ! Good idea ! I've always used, drywall compound between foam stones ! Great job !

not sure on other ideas for the inside... I want mine to look like either stone or mud and grass... Thats what I am thinking about doing... mud and grass like a landslide kind of thing.

Well, i put in the foam, took a picture and walked away. OOPS!!!. When i went and looked after dinner not thinking the foam would expand that much when i put it in. I ended up with foam higher then the stone. Now i am thinking how am i going to fix this. After spending some time looking at it i kinda started liking the way it looked. So i took out the flat gray and had at it. Now i like it even more. After it dries again i will start washes of black, brown and white.

When laying stone, the mortar will push out between the stone. Its usually after removing the mortar that it doesn't stick out between them... so, your stone work is more primative....
    Thats a GOOD thing !!!

At least when we have done any stone work thats how it was...... we aren't pros so... I don't know how a pros would turn out !!! hehe
