So for my first project this year I was thinking about taking one of my shitty blucky corpses and making it into a more fleshy type of zombie thing... so I don't have to go spending hundreds of dollars on half ass commercial props. so I was wondering if I could use oil based clay to bulk up the skeleton a bit and then add all of the detail. But, I really don't want to have to go through the whole molding and casting process, so could this prop last by itself or would the clay eventually dry up and crack or something? Is molding and casting really necessary or is that only used for people willing to sell their own props. I've never used clay before so I'm completely clueless and need professional help. thanks

actually I've used it before for all of the gory stuff but I'm trying to make something somewhat similar to this...

which I don't think can really be accomplished with great stuff... right?
I figure the only way you can actually get all of that detail in is with clay

Oil base clay won't dry out, and anything else that does air dry shrinks like mad. If you use oil base clay, anything that even touches your prop will dent it. Also, hair, dust and airborne particulate matter will find your clay and stick to it. It really isn't meant to be a permanant prop medium. The alternative to using clays would be paper products like Celluclay. It's a mache' that forms like clay, but isn't great for details, some folks use Paperclay over Celluclay to add detail. It dries without shrinking and looks great. Lauriebeast used that for her Bride of Frankenstien prop.

yep Doc is Right the clay we use is for sculpting only..so you can bake but I would not try that either it might melt your skeleton. Maybe cheesecloth and resin like you buy for fiber glass.could work i have a old skeleton arm made of the same stuff bucky's are made of I could try it for you as a test if you want? let me know?

Spartan - Check out Cassie's tutorial on her mommy demon. She has detailed pics on what she has done to a blucky using latex & cotton balls and cotton batting.
It's in the tutorials section called Mommy demon.
