Haha, if you look very closely you will see a thin white frame bordering my window (think of it as a picture frame). The wood was screwed to this frame. Then I had just to screws above the windows that this frame hung off of.

Let me know if that makes no sense (still early in the morning for me.)

Bilbo, pour bleach on them. That will take the color out and turn them the gray color.... then between that, a torch and hammer you should be able to get the desired effect !

If I build it, will they come ?

I used the tea and iron acetate method. Wipe strong tea on the boards, let dry, then wipe them with iron acetate. You can make iron acetate solution by soaking steel wool in a jar with a 50% vinegar solution for about 2-3 days. Here's what happens to the wood:

I work at a local newspaper and when the advertisements come in they are on wooden pallets, we throw away or give away wooden pallets, so check your local newspaper.. The pallets we have here sit outside, so they get aged. The ones that are newer looking, I spray with cheap spraypaint.

Also check your local freecycle group nearest you and ask for left over paint in all colors... Get several colors and mix together to form a gray color.. Add water to paint mixture and brush on...

Can you say free and free..

Dig in your couch cusions or look in your car for about $1 in change. Go to Walmart paint department and buy a can of CHEAP black spray paint. The walmart I go to has cheap spray paint for 96 cents...but of course I get all my spray paint FREE....my little secret I can't tell you about. I have about 150 cans of different colors heheheh anyways.... DUST THE WOOD WITH THE SPRAY PAINT. ! can will go a long way since your not actually "PAINTING" the wood. And of course beat the crap out of the wood first.

I second the vinegar and steel wool solution. Plus a good beating!!!! Also painting them with some watered down gray paint will help.
