I have one of those same exact boxes. I think I bought it on clearance at a drug store several years ago.
If I remember right it's made by the "Take-One" company.
I'm not at home right now so I can't look at it to see.

Those are normally just simple photocells that detect a shadow or sudden light level change. If so, there will be two wires on the photocell that can be extended to a relay or switch. Should be an easy hack.
found some info on the company as well, it says they make novelties and have 1 employee:

It looks like this is their website:
Take One
That product looks like the one I have. I don't have a manual or packaging so I don't remember what the red button does or how to make it work. The packaging on their website says it is a test button. I am thinking that it was to disable/enable the battery maybe so that you could test it instead of being a record button.
Can this be hacked to record? If so then I found a place where I can get some for about $6-$7 (plus shipping).Terror31

Hmm, while searching for a cheap voice recorder I found gold, or so it looks like gold. What about these?
Motion Activated Door Chime Frog $4.80 (multi discount 3@$4.15, etc)
Record-It at Target $10.99
My Lil' Reminder Personal Digital Recorder Set of 2 $9.99
It seems you could use the guts of these and amplify the sound if needed. The frog says it is activated by motion up to 2 ft away which isn't much. If you had a motion sensor from a security light you could increase that drastically but the price per each goes up.Terror31

Where would this be? got a link? Can this be hacked to record? If so then I found a place where I can get some for about $6-$7 (plus shipping).
The ones that I have the red button is the record button. Push it down and record till the light goes off. Unless yours is different.
This im gonna call a BINGO! It does the same thing as the mimic machine. Just looks funny. But I dont care what they look like because I will tear the outer shell off anyway.Motion Activated Door Chime Frog $4.80 (multi discount 3@$4.15, etc)
See I like these because there easy to put what sound you want in them, they auto reset every time, you can add powered speakers to them, AND the motion sensor can be put next to the prop so only the prop moving will set it off. So all I gotta do is hit the button for the prop and "whoop" I got sound when the prop moves. AND THERE CHEAP!!!!

It looks like the one on Take One's website.

It seems that the red button on mine is a try me button that basically just turns on the "own voice" switch so it can't record and likely can't be hacked to. I guess I could just extend the cables (mic and test button) to another location so when the tots approach the door I could speak to them, err scare them.Terror31
