I'm making a cauldron out of a 55 gallon drum. I've already paint it black. I need some suggestions on how to make it look rusty or give it an old age look. Thanks to any comments I can get.

Why am I so sympathetic to the monsters. The answer is simple. Because I am one!

first get out where you can see some old rusty metal. take pics if you need to. Then get some brown paint and orange paint to match this and a painting sponge. dab brown paint on the metal whee you want it to look rusted. Usually if you do this lightly this is enough to give a rusted look. if you want go back with a very small ammount of orange over the brown try it out on something for practice first.
oh and remeber metal rusts on edges first or where it comes in contact with the ground(gets wet from dew and condensation. Also if it is something with bolts or screws they (unless galvanized) rust early too.

By the way, the drum is plastic. Sorry.

OK, well in that case paint it heavily with PVA glue mixed with black paint, coat it with dirt and sand to add texture, leave it to dry then paint it with a deep brown 'ink' (paint watered down) and finally dry brush with a rust red, that should do teh trick

you can just use bronze paint to make it look rusty where you need it , apply it with a sea sponge till you like the effect., layer it....you can also use a bluish color if you want to make your color look like copper that is aged too...
i was going to suggest that you can use a product that makes metal things rust but since it is plastic it wont work.....A Witch from Canada

They sell a kit at Home Depot/Lowes. its a spray can of rusty colored paint and a small can of a darker paint. You spray the item first then mix the other paint with water and brush it on with a foam brush then dab it off with crumpled paper towels/newspaper or plastic bags. Its not enough for a barrel but you can just buy a couple cans of brown primer and use the can of paint or get some similar color and follow the techique. You may need to rough up the barrel with some sand paper so the paint sticks better.

Ya know I hate the box stores but if you go in and ask they will set you up not only with what you need but usually detailed instruction of how to use it.
