I have one water spitting prop. It's an alien figure, wearing an old t-shirt from the "Alien" movie. It has a little plastic creature bursting out of the chest. In its mouth is an orifice that sprays water. It is built around an old water pic tooth cleaner and compressed air. This isn't going to be easy to describe and I'm not at home to take pic, but I'll try. I took a 1/4" hose barb and drilled a hole in the bottom of it. Through that hole, I inserted the nozzle of the water pic pointing toward the barbs outlet. I glued the nozzle into the hose barb. The other end of the barb is connected to an air line running from a solenoid valve. Both the water pic and the power source for the air solenoid are run off an X10 home automation appliance module activated by remote control, rather than a motion sensor. I really wanted to have control over when this thing fired. I DID NOT want to catch some kid in the face from 6 inches away when he's looking at the little alien ( as much as my son thought that would be funny as hell) It's very important that you have the ability to regulate the air pressure to the solenoid valve. You put 120 psi to this thing and it blasts a rooster tail of vaporized air and water out 15 feet. Certainly very scary, but at 4-6 feet its painful and could cause injury. If you have any intention to leave the prop to run on it's own by sensor/timer, then you must insure that people can't get to close to the nozzle and that pressures are kept low enough for safety.

Chaoscat, has the right idea, now that I have thought about this you need to use both water and compressed air, just like a paint spray gun. think of its as a tee with the compressed air coming in on the top left side of the tee and the water is in a container on the bottom of the tee. The air exits the tee on the top right side as it does it sucks up water from the container and vaporizes it as it exits the tee. A carburator works on this principal so does a perfume bottle the kind with the little bulb you squeeze.

So...do you plan to spray on guests, or spray in their general direction?

What if you used a cheap airbrush(they have them at Harbor Freight for about $5.00) and tape the trigger down. Then use a solenoid valve to trigger the compressed air. You can adjust the tip to get the right mixture of air and mist.
